The comeback of the Ford Ranger made other companies run into the mid-size truck segment. These which already have these pickups must update their offer. It is very simple. So, that is the main reason why we are seeing the 2020 Nissan Frontier redesign.
New 2020 Nissan Frontier Concept
The 2020 Nissan Frontier will make some radical changes. This truck appears in all other markets as Nissan Navara. These two are the same trucks with different engine lineups and badges. Now, the Frontier will move away from its sibling. Also, it will get closer to a US stablemate, Nissan Titan.
We can hear rumors that the Japanese truckmaker is going to launch the new platform for 2020 Nissan Frontier to replace global Navara architecture. That could be the one we can also find on Xterra. The SUV is coming back and it will use a body-on-frame architecture for better off-road capabilities. The same ladder frame will be good for 2020 Frontier since both models will have similar dimensions.
Redesign
The new platform is going to affect the performance and durability of the pickup truck. On the other hand, it will allow designers to build a new model on the ladder frame. This is going to be the first time since 2004 that Frontier is changing its look radically. A facelift from 2017 is not big enough to be noteworthy.
The 2020 Nissan Frontier redesign will change almost everything. A front fascia is getting huge modifications. New hood, grille, headlights. The truck could be slightly narrower and more aggressive. The company is not unveiling details. Neither do the spy photos. Well, the pickup will use the same design language as the upcoming Xterra SUV, whose platform Frontier is about to spawn. However, it doesn’t give us clues which parts these two stablemates are going to share, and what kind of unique upgrades are coming.
Richer Interior
Frontier is the cheapest truck you can buy, and the only that costs under $20,000. But, its major downside is a base interior. It offers only the fundamentals, and all extras cost. The sales share of these trucks is not big. So, the Japanese carmaker must improve it. Well, models loaded with some standard features cost as its competition. So, the base model is there to be called the only one under $20k. But, it can’t fool buyers.
The new 2020 Nissan Frontier interior is definitely getting more features, all over the lineup. From the base one, up to most favorite Pro-4X off-road edition. NissanConnect is updated to support most smartphone apps, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, the IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) is getting more and more options with each edition. However, navigation is going to be available only on upper trim levels. Also, these models will bring premium audio with more speakers.
2020 Nissan Frontier Specs
The new 2020 Nissan Frontier will keep the old heart. Again, the truck is cheap because it is using a four-cylinder engine. Once more, this is the less favorite option, with more potent V6 available.
But, the upcoming vehicle is going to take a 2.5-liter inline-four mill as the standard offer. With 150 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, we will find many more potent SUVs, even in the mid-size segment. We can’t tow too much with such configuration, but it still offers a respectable towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
A V6 offers more of everything. Power – a 4.0-liter unit delivers 260 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity jumps to 6,500 pounds. It sounds strange, but the fuel economy as at the same level as for the inline-four engine. Both units are returning 23 mpg on the highway. Well, the smaller block is sending power only to two wheels, and the V6 can use a 4WD. Also, both powertrains are available with manual and automatic transmission.
Diesel Powertrain
Frontier is the third best-selling truck in the mid-size segment. However, upcoming seasons are bringing more competition. Honda is updating Ridgeline, Ford launched Ranger, and Dodge could bring back Dakota. Also, Toyota is preparing a diesel drivetrain for its Tacoma. Its Japanese rival, Nissan, is about to do the same with Frontier. The truck could borrow an engine from its sibling from abroad, Navara. However, it is hard to tune this unit to meet the demands of the US market. On the other hand, the development of a new powertrain would be too expensive. Well, if they could do it for Titan XD, engineers in Nissan can tune some smaller engine for the mid-size truck.
2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X
The new platform will be stronger and more durable, allowing the 2020 Nissan Frontier to offer a more comfortable and reliable off-road drive. Also, the truck could gain an extra ground clearance to go over various obstacles in various terrains.
But, the 2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is the best package if you want to go off-road. This version is a match to Toyota Tacoma TRD and Chevy Silverado ZR2. Also, it will compete with Ford Ranger Raptor when it appears (you know it will happen sooner or later). So, the importance of such truck for all companies is not in doubt.
The 2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X upgrades the standard offer with off-road tuned suspension and shocks. Besides that, the pickup is getting a new set of all-terrain tires, skid plates, and various other minor upgrades.
