2024 Chevy Kodiak: Is It Coming Back or Not?

0

This nameplate left a big mark in automotive history and why wouldn’t it, if we consider that it was in production for nearly four decades? For all these years, Kodiak was the name Chevy used for its line of medium-duty pickups, the most capable pickups in the company’s offer. However, the officials made a decision to discontinue this model and replace it with the medium-duty Silverado, which was introduced in 2018. Since then, we have been getting reports about the comeback and it looks it could finally happen in the next year, with the 2024 Chevy Kodiak. Two scenarios are possible for this return. One is to see a medium-duty pickup again, other is to see it used for electrification.

While both scenarios seem likely at the moment, the officials are still quiet. We can only rely on rumors and speculations, so make sure to take the following paragraphs with a big reserve.

2024 Chevy Kodiak

2024 Chevy Kodiak Medium-Duty Truck

As mentioned, this nameplate was an integral part of Chevy’s lineup for a very long time, for nearly four decades. Through all these years, it was reserved for medium-duty pickups and Chevy produced everything from Class 4 to Class 8 models. In 2018, the company introduced a completely new, medium-duty Silverado model, developed together with the company called Navistar International. However, the medium-duty Silverado doesn’t cover all the segments but comes only in 4500, 5500 and 6500 iterations.

In the case of the 2024 Chevy Kodiak comeback, we would expect to see a typical re-branding. The current generation is still pretty fresh and should remain in production for several more years. Therefore, we would probably see nothing more than a couple of aesthetic changes. The company would bring the old nameplate back, but the overall design would remain the same.

Therefore, we expect to see the same chassis and suspension setup, as well as the same engine. This pickup truck comes with a familiar 6.6-liter Duramax V8 turbodiesel, which is rated at 350 horsepower in this case. Of course, it would come paired with the same Allison automatic transmission.

Some sources suggest that this nameplate comeback could also bring a few more upgrades. As we’ve just mentioned, Class 6 is the toughest Silverado you can get at the moment. The new Kodiak, on the other hand, will bring necessary mechanical upgrades and also offer Class 7 and Class 8 iterations. This primarily refers to chassis and suspension upgrades, but some sources also speculate about powertrain upgrades.

2024 Chevy Kodiak All-Electric Pickup

The comeback of the familiar nameplate doesn’t necessarily have to mean the comeback of the same design approach. Instead, it could be used for a brand-new pickup, as a kind of jumpstart, in order to boost sales. In such a situation, the 2024 Chevy Kodiak could come as an all-electric pickup. GM has already introduced the all-electric Hummer, while the electric Silverado is also on the way. So, we presume that the new Kodiak could be an all-electric HD or even a medium-duty pickup.

In any case, we presume it would be based on the same technology as Silverado and Hummer, with the advanced Ultium battery that supports large capacities and offers respectable charging speed. We presume that the battery would be good for 200kWh or bigger, which would ensure a respectable range as well. As for the electric motors setup, it’s still early for details.

2024 Chevy Kodiak EV

In the case of an all-electric 2024 Chevy Kodiak, we would also expect to see completely new styling. The Silverado EV might serve as an inspiration to some point but let’s not forget that this will primarily be a work mule. Therefore, we don’t expect to see some spectacular things regarding styling or interior design.

2024 Chevy Kodiak Release Date

The 2024 Chevy Kodiak is still far from production. Moreover, this article is based only on rumors, so it’s hard to predict will the old nameplate is going to be resurrected or not. Stay tuned for more news about this potential comeback.
