Besides that, a smaller displacement will consume less fuel. Downsides are lags of every turbo engine. We still don’t know how much it will affect the driving impression. The other lack of a smaller unit is decreased towing capacity. The new Frontier is coming with a seven-speed automatic transmission. It will boost the fuel economy even further.
Some sources say that a 3.5-liter V6 engine is also a possibility. This drivetrain is delivering 280 hp for the Pathfinder SUV, and 300 for Maxima. The truck will definitely take the output with more ponies. Besides that, a four-cylinder engine will remain the base drivetrain. Anyway, truckers are not so keen on it. Most units sold are coming with a V6 engine.
