2023 Mitsubishi L200 Redesign Will Bring PHEV Powertrain

0

The current generation of Mitsubishi’s pickup has been around since 2015 and considering that the competition is getting tougher, it’s no wonder that the new model is coming already in the next year, or in early 2023, as the 2023 Mitsubishi L200. The new model has been confirmed and from what we know so far, there are some pretty interesting novelties to come.

Of course, the overall design will be all-new and novelties will come both in terms of mechanics and aesthetics. Still, the most intriguing is the powertrain offer, which could be notably different compared to what we have on the offer nowadays. This particularly refers to electrification, as the new generation is likely to have hybrid powertrains in the offer only.

The upcoming redesign is about to bring a lot of new things. Considering that Mitsubishi is now part of the Renault Nissan Alliance, one of the first things that come to mind is the platform. We presume that the two Japanese companies are developing a new architecture, which will be used not just for the new L200, but for the next-generation Navara as well. That means that the 2023 Mitsubishi L200 would probably become slightly bigger, with a new chassis and a little bit more refined setup. Some sources even suggest an independent rear suspension.

Of course, we also expect to see a completely new styling. The current generation looks great, especially after 2019, so we presume that most of the changes would be evolutionary. The overall shape would remain largely the same, while the front end would borrow design solutions from the latest models in Mitsubishi’s lineup, such as the new Outlander.

Interior

If you look at the current generation of L200, the exterior design is one of the most attractive in the class. However, that’s not the case with the interior. On the inside, the current model isn’t particularly impressive and that’s why we have big expectations from the new generation. Mid-size pickups are more than just utility vehicles these days and every manufacturer tries to offer a nice-looking, convenient cabin design. We expect the same from the 2023 Mitsubishi L200, which should offer a more car-like look, with nicer materials, a higher level of comfort and more tech features.

Just like the current generation, the new generation should come in two variants. Base models would come with a  single cab layout, while double cab versions would be on the offer as well.

2023 Mitsubishi L200 Powertrain

We are living in the era of massive electrification and that trend is becoming present in the segment of pickup trucks as well. So, what we expect to see in the 2023 Mitsubishi L200 is a couple of hybrid powertrain options. Although the officials are still quiet, it looks like the Japanese manufacturer will offer plug-in hybrid versions with both gasoline and diesel engines, depending on the market. For example, the Australian model could easily come with a diesel PHEV, based on the current 2.4-liter turbodiesel, which is quite efficient even without the help of electric motors.

On the other hand, in parts of the world like Europe, where emissions standards are much higher, the PHEV system would be based on a gasoline engine. We presume that Mitsubishi would offer something similar to the current powertrain found in the Outlander, though with a bigger battery and more potent electric motors.

More details about the powertrain should come in the near future, so stay tuned.

At this point, we are still waiting to hear from the officials on this matter. Still, most unofficial reports suggest that the next-generation 2023 Mitsubishi L200 will arrive either in the last quarter of 2022 or in the first half of 2023. Of course, the competition will remain largely the same, with key rivals like Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger etc.
