By It’s no secret that the Japanese manufacturer is working on a new generation of its mid-size pickup. The current model has been around since 2015 and if we consider that most competitors were updated recently, this looks like a logical move. At this point, we know for sure that the new generation will come with several significant changes, starting from the new platform, which will be shared with the next-generation Nissan Navara. Also, it looks like the new model will come with an electrified powertrain, probably already in the next year, as the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV.
At this point, details about the new hybrid powertrain are still unavailable but most sources suggest that the new truck will use a plug-in hybrid system. Mitsubishi has a lot of experience in making such a powertrain but we are pretty sure that the engineers are now working on a completely new system, which will be way more powerful and way more efficient than everything we’ve seen from the company so far.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV should arrive sometime in the second half of the next year.
2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV Powertrain
The next generation of this pickup will certainly bring a lot of novelties and the powertrain is certainly one of the most interesting aspects. At this point, we don’t know much about it but most reports suggest a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Allegedly, the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV will come with a completely new setup.
In the past, Mitsubishi has been often praised for designing great PHEV systems, especially when it comes to emissions. We have no doubt that such a great experience will help a lot but we also expect to see a completely new system this time. Details are still unavailable but it would make sense to see a gasoline engine provided by Renault. In that case, we would probably see a turbo-four engine with smaller displacement and better fuel economy. Some sources even speculate on a hybrid system based on a diesel engine.

Other than the hybrid powertrain, we expect that the next-generation Triton will also be offered a diesel engine. So far, the truck has been using Mitsubishi’s 2.4-liter unit, which offers a good balance between power and efficiency. Considering the merger with Renault Nissan and the fact that the new platform will be provided by Nissan, there’s a big chance to see changes in this aspect. The new model would use a 2.3-liter unit from Navara, which is currently available in two variants, with 160 or 190 horsepower.
2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV Design
As we already mentioned, the new generation of Mitsubishi pickup will bring a lot of big novelties. One of them will be a completely new platform. Considering that Mitsubishi is now part of Renault Nissan Alliance, the new architecture will be derived from Nissan. We are talking about the familiar F-Alpha platform, which will be updated for this occasion. In any case, Triton will benefit a lot from the new platform, especially in terms of ride quality. To remind you, Navara has been using an independent rear suspension for a long time, while the current Triton still rides on good-old leaf springs.
Naturally, we also expect to see a completely new styling. Some rendering photos already appeared on the network and they all show a pickup based on the brand’s new design language, which once again showcases Mitsubishi’s futuristic approach to aesthetical solutions. Also, we expect the new generation to feature a little bit bigger dimensions than the current model.

Interior
The current model is still competitive in many aspects but that can’t be said for the interior design, which looks a little bit old. So, we expect improvements in this aspect as well. The first thing that comes to mind is a more attractive dashboard design, with nicer materials and better materials. We also count on new tech goodies, including a larger infotainment screen and maybe even a digital instrument cluster.
Just like the current model, the new generation will be offered in both single and double-cab layouts. However, we don’t believe that the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV could be offered with a single row of seats. The larger cabin should be the only available with this model.
2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV Release Date
We expect that the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton PHEV could arrive already in the second half of the next year. Details about the price are yet to be announced.
