2023 Mitsubishi Triton Will Offer Both Diesel and PHEV Models

0

The current generation of Mitsubishi’s well-known mid-size pickup truck has been around since 2015 and it looks we are about to see big changes in the near future. Allegedly, the new generation is in development and from what we can hear, it is about to bring some quite interesting novelties. The most important will be the one under the hood, where we expect to see a  plug-in hybrid powertrain, for the first time in this segment.

Other than the new powertrain, this redesign will bring changes in many other aspects as well. Of course, we are about to see a new exterior design, while there is also a good reason that the new model will be co-developed with Nissan. Of course, the new styling and interior are another thing that comes to mind, as well as the addition of the latest tech features.

2023 Mitsubishi Triton Redesign

This redesign is about to bring a lot of novelties and one of the things that we should keep in mind is that Mistubishi is now part of the Renault Nissan Alliance. Therefore, it could easily be developed alongside next-generation Navara. The two models would share the platform, as well as many mechanical parts.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that the new 2023 Mitsubishi Triton will come with a pretty exclusive design. We presume that the new model will follow the path that was established in 2019 when this pickup was adapted to the new design language. We presume that the new generation will bring further evolution of this aesthetical approach and that the new model will look even more striking.

Another thing we’ve heard about the next-generation 2023 Mitsubishi Triton is the suspension upgrade. It looks like the Japanese manufacturer plans to improve the ride quality, so higher grades will probably come with upgraded rear suspension. On the other hand, the most basic versions will probably continue with super-reliable leaf springs.

Interior

The interior design is probably one of the weakest points of the current generation. It looks old, even by the standards of this segment. So, we expect to see a little bit nicer dashboard design, with nicer materials and more tech features.

When it comes to cab configurations, we don’t expect surprises. The new model will come both in single and double cab layouts, with different bed sizes on offer.

2023 Mitsubishi Triton Engines

This aspect will bring probably the biggest novelty of all. If we can trust the latest reports, we are about to see a plug-in hybrid powertrain, for the first time in this segment. At this point, the details are still unavailable, we presume we could see an upgraded version of Mitsubishi’s familiar plug-in hybrid system, which is based on a 2.4-liter engine and comes with two electric motors and a single-speed automatic transmission, with a combined output of around 221 horsepower.

A diesel version is about to carry on in the same way. This probably means the same, quite capable 2.4-liter turbodiesel under the hood, which puts out around 133 kW (180 hp) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque. Some sources suggest the new generation could switch to Renaults 2.3-liter turbodiesel, but we are not sure about this.

The current model uses a 6-speed automatic from Aisin, though we could see some upgrades for the next generation.

2023 Mitsubishi Triton Release Date and Competition

We expect that the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton will arrive in about a year. It will hit the market either in late 2022 or in early 2023. Of course, the competition will remain the same and it will include models like Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max etc.
