2019 GMC Canyon Changes and Redesign

0

The new 2019 GMC Canyon and its twin sibling Chevy Colorado won’t change its appearance for the upcoming season. They are exactly what we got used to. Versatile mid-size trucks with four-cylinder, V6, and diesel engine in the lineup. What makes the Canyon different than its twin, and the rest mid-size trucks is the Denali model. It is the only premium pickup we can buy in this segment. The combination of luxury and utility is hard to match. But, the 2020 Canyon can expect greater competition with the new Ford Ranger back on the US roads.

Plenty of options is the main advantage of the 2019 GMC Canyon. Buyers who opt for this model won’t have an easy choice. They can pick cab configuration, bed length, engine, drive type, transmission, trim level, and atop of that, there are extra features. With such options, we can create the best solution for our needs. That could be a working mule, a luxurious truck, or an economy-saving pickup. The biggest downside is the cost of premium 2019 Canyon Denali, which starts higher than full-size trucks. Well, expectations are high from this unit, which could bring the last update before the next-gen vehicle.

2019 GMC Canyon Specs

Three engines are available for buyers of the new 2019 GMC Canyon. The base truck is coming with a 2.5-l inline-four drivetrain. Of course, this is the least potent, but also the most affordable. It returns 26 mpg, and only a diesel engine can do it better. Also, this small block can produce 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, which is good for 3,500 pounds of towing potential.

If you want to haul more, towing capacity raises to 7,000 pounds with a 3.6-liter V6. On the other hand, this engine requires more fuel. It returns 18/25 mpg with 2WD setup or 17/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. While for the first one buyers can choose between six-pace manual and auto transmission, an eight-speed auto gearbox is the only solution for the bigger engine. This is the mightiest drivetrain in 2019 GMC Canyon lineup with 310 hp.

Diesel

The most popular option if you need this truck for towing is a Duramax unit. The 2019 GMC Canyon diesel can produce 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. This is enough energy to make the pickup tow up to 7,700 pounds. With Chevy Colorado Diesel, this is the class-leading capacity. Well, the diesel engine is also the most efficient, with 30 mpg gas mileage on the highway. The Denali model is available only with an AWD, and this setup drops the mileage to 20/28 mpg.

2019 GMC Canyon Denali

Top of the class model for all GMC trucks and SUVs. Denali is a perfect combination of utility and luxury. This truck is the only premium model in the mid-size segment. As its base sibling, it also offers many options. Well, not all. It is built on Crew Cab configuration. Buyers will choose a short or long bed, and V6 petrol or turbodiesel engine.

Interior upgrades are stunning. From an 8-inch touchscreen display to leather upholstery, everything seems like we are riding in a luxury sedan. But more spacious. General Motors is also offering a lot of premium features for the infotainment system, while some parts are also coming as optional. These are additional skid plates and various bed accessories, for example.

2019 GMC Canyon Redesign

The new 2019 GMC Canyon suffers a redesign, while the next-gen truck could arrive in 2022. These are just rumors, but we assume the sources are right. After changes for 2019, in the next couple of years, we will see only minor updates.

Some of the things that are different than on the predecessor are both interior and exterior parts. The new Canyon didn’t suffer the complete overhaul. However, small updates and modifications are refreshing the cabin and body of the truck. Sunroof is available for the Denali model. However, safety measures won’t let designers bring this feature to the regular model yet.

Expected Updates

Fans expected but didn’t get some changes. Yet. During next season, the 2019 GMC Canyon could add a 10-speed automatic transmission to replace a six- and eight-pace cases on petrol engines. Duramax diesel units stick to a six-speed box. Also, General Motors could boost the performance of the 2019 GMC Canyon off the road. So, the Colorado ZR2 truck could get a sibling. On the other hand, we doubt this could happen. While Colorado is more off-road oriented, Canyon focuses on the luxury division.

2019 GMC Canyon Price

The new 2019 GMC Canyon costs less than $23,000 with a 4-cylinder engine under its hood. That is the SL model. CANYON package adds $3,000 over the starting price.  SLE model is still under $30k. The 2019 Canyon Denali is over $40,000. All-wheel drive setup adds $7,000 and diesel engine another $5,000. So, the SLE trim with Duramax drivetrain and AWD goes over $40k. Denali, with all upgrades, will cost almost $50,000.

Competition

The new 2019 GMC Canyon will have more competitors than before. The return of the Ford Ranger to the US market is definitely alarming the entire segment. Toyota Tacoma is preparing diesel engine and the new TRD Pro package. Also, updates are coming on Nissan Frontier and Honda Ridgeline in 2019.
