The old days when 3/4 and 1-ton pickups were nothing more than utility machines are long gone. Today, these pickups are also about luxury and performance, including off-roading. That’s why we have big expectations from the 2024 GMC Sierra HD, which is about to bring significant novelties, even though this won’t be a complete overhaul. This mid-cycle update will bring all kinds of updates, starting from the new styling and a completely new interior design.
There is much more to come. The updated model will also bring big novelties under the hood, where we expect to see an upgraded turbodiesel, as well as a new transmission for the gasoline model. Finally, the company will introduce two new trim levels. The new Denali Ultimate will be the new most luxurious variant of the truck, while the AT4X will bring all kinds of off-road upgrades.
The updated 2024 GMC Sierra HD is expected to arrive next summer.
2024 GMC Sierra HD Design
The current generation has been around for a while and the 2024 GMC Sierra HD will bring a mid-cycle refresh. This will be a pretty comprehensive update, with novelties in all aspects. Of course, one of the most notable things will be the new styling, which will take a lot of inspiration from the recently updated Sierra 1500. Most of the changes will happen at the front, where we are about to see a new grille, new headlights and more. The whole pickup will look more rugged and more aggressive.
As we’ve just mentioned, the company will also introduce a new range-topping trim, called Denali Ultimate. Compared to the “classic” Denali, it will bring more standard equipment and also a couple of exclusive styling details, such as blacked chrome details in various areas, including the new grille. The wheels will be blacked as well, which will all make this truck look even more upscale.
Another big novelty will be the new AT4X model. This will be an off-road-oriented model, with all kinds of mechanical upgrades, but also with styling that accentuates the model’s off-roading nature. It will also feature blacked exterior, as well as pieces of hardware like off-road suspension, locking rear differential and more.
On the inside, changes will be even bigger. Compared to the outgoing model, which carried on from the previous generation, the new one will get a completely new dashboard, designed in the same manner as in the 1500 model. You may count on much nicer materials, as well as on far more attractive looks. Furthermore, improvements in terms of ergonomics will also come, as the gear selector will finally be moved from the steering column to the center console.
Also, there are significant upgrades in terms of tech features. For example, there is a new, pretty massive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (8-inch unit in base models), a 13.4-inch infotainment screen, 15-inch head-up display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Moreover, the company introduced a couple of new safety systems, such as rear cross-traffic braking and trailer-side side blind-spot monitoring.
2024 GMC Sierra HD Engines
When it comes to powertrains, big novelties are coming in the form of the upgraded diesel engine. The well-known 6.6-liter V8 turbodiesel gets significant power and torque upgrade. You may now count on a max output of 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet, compared to the previous version that featured 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. What’s also important is the new turbocharger, which provides 25% more low-end torque.
On the other hand, the gasoline version continues with the same specs. We are talking about a familiar 6.6-liter V8, which puts out around 401 horsepower and 464 horsepower. However, the big novelty is that the gasoline version now also comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, just like the diesel unit.
