The Frontier nameplate is primarily known in North America, but it is also used in the various markets across the South and Central America. In these markets, we are talking about a model that’s renamed Navara, which features a little bit different design compared to the North American version. Considering that the Navara is mainly powered by diesel engines, the 2023 Nissan Frontier Diesel doesn’t sound uncommon at all. Moreover, this has been a regular thing for years. These days, some sources also speculate about seeing an oil burner in North America. At this point, the officials are still quiet.

If this happens, we believe that the Japanese manufacturer would come up with something bigger and more powerful than the current 2.5-liter unit. Other than that, we don’t expect bigger surprises. The overall layout would be the same as in the current model, which came redesigned last year.

2023 Nissan Frontier Diesel Engine

Of course, the most interesting aspect of the 2023 Nissan Frontier Diesel would be the engine. If you look at the Navara-based Frontier across Latin America, it comes with a quite familiar 2.5-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 188 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It comes with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission.

While that’s a pretty decent and pretty capable setup, we presume that North American buyers would probably prefer something more powerful. That’s why some experts suggest a bigger, 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel. That engine also comes in pair with a 7-speed automatic transmission but features significantly more power. The max output would go around 255 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, which are the numbers that would put this pickup on par with Jeep Gladiator Diesel.

On the other hand, the gasoline version will certainly continue in the same way. It comes with a capable 3.8-liter V6 that puts out 310 horsepower.

On the other hand, we don’t expect changes regarding base design. This pickup has been redesigned last year and we are pretty sure it will remain in its current form for the next several years. In terms of the styling, the pickup looks very sharp and modern, following the brand’s latest design language.

More importantly, the chassis and suspension setup is great. Compared to the competition, the Frontier uses a quite refined setup, especially on the rear axle. That ensures a smooth comfortable ride, without sacrificing too much athleticism. There is almost no body lean in corners.

When it comes to off-road performance, we believe that the new engine could be offered in the Pro-4X trim. This trim brings a couple of upgrades, such as standard all-wheel drive, skid plates, upgraded tires and similar things.

Interior

This aspect also wouldn’t bring any bigger surprises. The last year’s redesign brought a completely new cabin design, which looks great. The dashboard looks very attractive and also utilizes high-quality materials. There’s a lot of attention to detail, while the long list of standard equipment makes the cabin look even more attractive.

The 2023 Nissan Frontier Diesel should come in two variants, King Cab and Crew Cab version. In both cases, the front seats are very spacious and comfortable, some of the best in the class. The second-row space in the King Cab model is quite limited and hardly accommodates adults. The Crew Cab is more generous in this aspect.

The King Cab model comes with a 6-foot 1-inch bed, while the Crew Cab model comes with a 5-foot unit.

Features

Once again, no bigger surprises are expected. So, base versions should come with things like keyless entry, push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Among upgrades, expect to find goodies like remote start, sunroof, dual-zone climate control, a 9-inch touch screen, navigation, a 10-speaker audio system, a 10-speaker Fender audio system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, and two additional USB ports.

When it comes to safety, all models should come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors, reverse automatic emergency braking and surround-view camera system should be available.
