Even though the world of HD pickup trucks is mostly about the “Big Three”, the competition is extremely fierce. Simply, this is one of the most important segments of the American automotive industry and new technologies and design solutions are coming on a yearly basis. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the 2022 Ram 3500 is about to come with some pretty big updates, according to the latest reports.
From what we know so far, there is a big chance to see big novelties under the hood of this truck. Allegedly, FCA has been planning to get a new transmission for the diesel version for a while. The current 6-speed unit should be replaced with a newer-generation unit and that would, without any doubt, improve this already impressive pickup truck. Other than that, we don’t expect more significant changes, though smaller updates are always possible. In any case, the 2022 Ram 3500 shouldn’t arrive before the last quarter of the year.
2022 Ram 3500 Could Get Allison Transmission!?
Without any doubt, the biggest novelty for the 2022 Ram 3500 would be a new transmission. Although officials are still quiet on this matter, many reports see this as a certain thing. Of course, this refers to the diesel version only, as the gasoline model an excellent 8-speed ZF-sourced transmission.
When it comes to the diesel version, the current model relies on a 6-speed unit from Aisin. While it is still a pretty good unit, particularly in terms of reliability and durability, rivals offer newer-generation gearboxes with 10 speeds. Many see this as a drawback, so FCA is about to get something newer and with more speeds.
According to our sources, Ram won’t wait for Aisin to develop a completely new transmission. Instead, they will switch to Allison’s new 10-speed unit, the same one the is used for the new Silverado HD, which turned out to be a very good and reliable gearbox. As we’ve already mentioned, the official confirmation is yet to come.
2022 Ram 3500 Redesign
When it comes to base design characteristics, they will definitely remain the same. The 2022 Ram 3500 is about to carry on with the same layout, which has been introduced a few years ago. Mechanically, it’s heavily based on the standard 1500 half-ton pickup truck. Still, it comes with a couple of important upgrades, such as heavy-duty suspension and chassis reinforcements. Speaking of the suspension, this truck is available with self-leveling air suspension, which is the class-exclusive feature that provides superior ride quality.
When it comes to styling, we don’t expect to see bigger changes. The current model already looks pretty good and we expect from 2022 Ram 3500 to carry on in the same way. Of course, smaller updates like new color options are always possible.
Once again, there are no bigger changes to come. The current model already features by far the best-looking cabin in the class, which offers great build quality and loads of quality materials. Everything looks really upscale, while we also like the fact that you can get most of the tech features from the light-duty 1500.
Of course, the trim level organization will remain the same. So, you may count on familiar versions of the truck, starting from the Tradesman, which is a typical workhorse. The Big Horn is a bit of an upgrade, while the Laramie already brings fancy tech goodies, as well as some exclusive styling details. The Longhorn is an even more stylish version of the pickup.
Finally, there is the range-topping Limited model. This one comes standard with a large 12.0-inch touchscreen, as well as unique styling details and some pretty advanced safety features.
2022 Ram 3500 Engines
Except for the transmission, things under the hood shouldn’t change. Therefore, the 2022 Ram 3500 will continue with three familiar powertrain options. Base models will come with a well-known 6.4-liter V8 gasoline engine. It puts out around 410 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It comes coupled with 8-speed automatic transmission.
On the other side, the diesel version comes in two variants. The base version is good for about 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. You can also get an upgraded version of the engine, which once again features class-leading capabilities. In numbers, you may count on about 420 horsepower and 1.075 pound-feet of torque.
The diesel currently uses a 6-speed automatic from Aisin, but there is a big chance to see a new 10-speed unit for the next year, as we already mentioned.
2022 Ram 3500 Release Date and Price
Despite the potential updates, we expect that the 2022 Ram 3500 will arrive in the second half of the year, without bigger changes in price. Therefore, base models should go around 35.500 dollars. Of course, the F-350 and Silverado 3500HD will continue to be key competitors.
