2022 Toyota Electric Pickup: What to Expect

0

When it comes to electrification, the Japanese manufacturer is a true pioneer in the automotive industry. We’ve been seeing Toyota’s hybrids for nearly 25 years but interestingly, we are still waiting for its first all-electric model. EVs have quickly become mainstream and soon will become present in the pickup truck segment as well. Therefore, it’s no wonder that we are getting reports about the 2022 Toyota Electric Pickup, which could come already in the next year.

At this point, we don’t know much about this. Toyota’s spokesmen aren’t particularly generous with details but heard from them that all-electric pickups will happen soon. Will this happen in the form of a brand-new model, or we are about to see a familiar nameplate in a completely new layout.

As we’ve just mentioned, details about the 2022 Toyota Electric Pickup are still a mystery. We definitely can’t talk about design characteristics and any numbers. However, we could talk about possible directions. The first one that comes to mind is to see a completely new model, with a brand-new name.
If we consider that the Japanese manufacturer has recently presented a concept of an all-electric SUV, which is expected to become a production model in the near future, we may other models in the future as well. After all, many rival companies already work on all-electric pickups. The F-150 Electric is on the way, as well as the new GMC Hummer EV. Furthermore, there are a plethora of brand-new EV pickups on the way, such as Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and many others.

The electric SUV currently wears the BZ4X names, so we may presume that the new 2022 Toyota Electric Pickup would also have BZ in its name.

2022 Toyota Electric Pickup: Tacoma or Tundra

While offering an electric pickup truck with a brand-new name sounds perfectly right, we have no doubt that the use of a familiar nameplate would also bring a couple of benefits. Simply, such an approach is great in terms that a familiar name can attract more potential buyers. Therefore, there’s a big chance that some of the current models could get their EV variants.

Of course, this refers to Tacoma and Tundra. The latter is about to come completely new by the end of the year and it will bring tons of novelties. From what we know so far, a hybrid version is a certain thing. However, there are still no words about the all-electric version.

Many believe that Tacoma could be the first one to get an all-electric version. This truck should also get a full redesign in the next few years, which leaves enough time for Toyota engineers to prepare an all-electric variant for the initial launch.

Finally, we could see a scenario that includes both models in electric variants. That sounds perfectly fine, as the two new models will share the platform. So, they could share most of the electric powertrain parts as well. Of course, Tundra would come with a bigger battery and more potent electric motor but the general design approach would be the same.

Development of these all-electric pickups will take time. Meanwhile, we are eagerly waiting for the new generation of Tundra. We expect that it will come in two powertrain variants. Besides the standard turbo V6 engine, it should also come with a hybrid powertrain on offer. Although the officials are still quiet about this powertrain, rumors say it should come with a combination of a V6 engine and a couple of electric motors. So, the total output would probably go around 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, which should ensure more than respectable performances.
