0

It looks like GM is pretty busy these days with various new models to come. Of course, the truck department is one of the most important things for this manufacturer, so it’s no wonder we are seeing constant updates and novelties. After the last-year redesign of the standard 1500 model, all-new HD models of Sierra are about to come this fall. Big novelties are expected for the next year as well, as the 2021 GMC Sierra is about to get hybrid powertrain, according to the latest reports. Although many reports claim this is a certain thing, we are still waiting for the official confirmation.

Electrified trucks are pretty much a certain thing when it comes to the future of the segment. Moreover, some of the rivals already came with some kind of hybrid powertrain. For example, the recently-redesigned Ram 1500 is available with a mild hybrid setup, no matter the engine choice.

On the other side, other major manufacturers are working on their electrified models as well. Of course, the first one that comes to mind is Toyota Tundra, as the Japanese manufacturer is one of the leaders in the automotive industry when it comes to hybrid technology. Also, keep in mind that F-150 is about to come in hybrid version soon, most like already in the next year. Moreover, an all-electric version of the iconic truck is expected as well.

As you can see, most major truckmakers are working hardly on electrification. GM is no exception either. However, this company will have a little bit different approach. Just like its corporal sibling, Chevy Silverado, the 2021 GMC Sierra is also expected to get a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The exact details about this powertrain are still unavailable, but it looks like the company is aiming for a system that will be able to provide not just great performances and fuel economy, but decent autonomy as well.

GMC Sierra Hybrid to Use Cadillac’s Hybrid System?

Considering that there are still official details about the new powertrain, we can find various reports that are suggesting different setups. Most of them are suggest a V6-based system, some of them even eight cylinders under the hood. However, it looks like the company will seek for something even more efficient.

Most likely, that will be a system that is similar to one that powers the Cadillac CT6 Hybrid. This model combines a small 2.0-liter turbo-four engine with an 18.4-kWh battery pack and the total amount of power goes up to 335 horsepower. Seems like a quite decent amount of power. Still, there is a chance to see a slight boost for this occasion, as well as a bigger battery, which would provide bigger autonomy, an electric-only range of around 50 miles. Also, such setup would provide much more torque compared to conventional gasoline engines. This is great when it comes to towing.
