Still, the truck can take maximum from its turbodiesel drivetrain. After a revisit, the Power Stroke mill will be able to create more torque and increase towing capacity.
Mechanics are not the only one busy at the moment. Designers are working hard to improve the styling of the 2020 Ford F-450 truck. The entire Super Duty lineup will be more aggressive with changes on the front fascia, bed, and inside the cabin. Cabin, bed, and trim level options will add more versatility, so buyers can build a perfect truck for their needs. Well, the F-450 is the biggest one in Ford’s Super Duty lineup, but F-250 and F-350 are also worthy of checking if you need less power.
New Engine For 2020 Ford F-450
The biggest thing that happened to Super Duty lineup in the last few years is coming next season. Rumors about the new engine are swirling for a year or two. Now, it seems that sources were right and a 7.3-liter unit is coming. This is a third V8 engine in Ford’s heavy-duty lineup. The company only confirmed the drivetrain is in development, leaving details for the official premiere. So, we have to come back to the same sources that announced the arrival of the new powertrain.
The 2020 Ford F-450 uses a cam-in-block system with overhead-valve architecture. There we find forged steel crankshaft and a cast iron block. While towing a lot of cargo, additional cooling is provided by oil jets. The new engine will be capable to deliver at least 450 hp and 550-600 lb-ft of torque. Of course, engineers will pair it with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The latest innovation by Ford is drive modes for different types of terrains and weather. This will make any job a lot easier.
The new 7.3-liter engine is going to tow more than its petrol sibling. On the other hand, it will still be short from the diesel unit capable to haul 34,000 pounds. It is unknown if the new drivetrain is getting an optional dual rear wheel setup. Gooseneck and the 5th wheel will increase its towing capacity. With it, this number could go up to 25,000 pounds.
Other Drivetrains
The base setup for the 2020 Ford F-450 includes a 6.2-liter petrol engine. This unit can also expect the revisit before the launch of the next-gen Super Duty. It is able to create 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Still, this is less favorite engine compared to the diesel unit available for F-450. Currently, it is paired with a six-speed transmission, but for the next season, Ford will switch it with a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
The best-selling versions of the F-450 are carrying turbodiesel engine. A 6.7-liter Power Stroke unit is going to be there for the next season. It is capable to burst 450 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque. It remains a leader in the segment, creating more twisting power than Cummins engine for Ram HD and Duramax unit for Chevy Silverado HD lineup. With this setup, the 2020 Ford F-450 can pull over 34,000 pounds. While the petrol powertrain is getting a new transmission, the diesel mill stays connected to a six-speed automatic case.
2020 Ford F-450 Dually
Maximum towing capacity is available with 5th-wheel/gooseneck configuration. It requires dual rear wheels. The 2020 Ford F-450 with such setup allows better traction and balance. Also, the bed can take more cargo while maintaining a weight balance between the front and back of the truck. Of course, the DRW is a more expensive option than the standard configuration. But, if you need maximum towing capacity for your work, this truck might cost more in the start, but in the end, it pays off. Imagine that you need to move 30,000 pounds. With Ford F-450 dually you can do it at once, while every other configuration requires a second trip and additional fuel consumption.
2020 Ford F-450 Redesign
Changes under the hood are the most important for these working mules. Cosmetic treatments are not a key part. However, fans of Ford F-450 will be happy to see their favorite truck with a new look. Ford announced changes on the front fascia. The entire Super Duty lineup is getting new grille and nose. Headlights and bumper will complete the redesign. The cabin of the 2020 Ford F-450 will also suffer significant changes. However, the interior is going to keep most of its equipment. There are six trim levels to choose from, and the features list depends on it. The entry-level version is XL, mid-range is XLT and Lariat, while the premium trucks are King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. The last one will be the most expensive and the most loaded. Whatsoever, you won’t be able to take a SuperCab layout or a short bed. The F-450 will exclusively use the long 8-feet bed, while buyers are picking either standard 2-seat cabin, or extended Crew Cab. Maximum seating capacity in this configuration is five passengers.
Prices
The new 2020 Ford F-450 will cost under $50,000. Well, that is for a base XL model with Regular Cab. Crew Cab adds $4,000. A truck with XLT trim level costs over $50k. Lariat is cutting Regular cab and its price starts behind $60k, while King Ranch costs more than $70k. Platinum version of the F-450 will probably be around $80,000 for the next season, and the premium offering finishes with Limited edition. Camel leather seats, dual moonroof, and tons of features for the Sync3 infotainment system will make this one cost over $90,000.
