By The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning will represent the third production year of the company’s first all-electric pickup truck and it looks like there are some important updates to come. Namely, it looks like the Blue Oval Company is about to update and upgrade the battery, not only in terms of capacity and range but also in terms of charging speed, which is currently one of the weakest points. On the other hand, we don’t expect the overall layout to change.
The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning should offer better battery technology but other than that, we count on a familiar design and features. Therefore, you may expect familiar benefits, starting from pretty impressive electric performance, a spacious cabin, a long list of standard equipment etc. On the other hand, the biggest complaints go to limited max towing and payload capacity.
Despite the updates, we don’t expect the launch date to be scheduled much earlier than usual, but rather at a typical time of year.
2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Is Getting Better Battery
As we’ve just mentioned, the is expected to get a big battery update and upgrade, which should make it more competitive. Namely, the current model comes in two variants, with a max range that goes between 230 and 320 miles. For comparison, the Rivian R1T offers a max range of 400 miles but autonomy isn’t even the F-150’s main drawback. The biggest problem is charging speed, which is limited to 150kW at its best. For comparison, the R1T offers a 220kW charging speed, while the new Hummer EV features pretty advanced battery technology with a charging speed of 350 kW. We don’t know how the Blue Oval company is going to increase charging speed but that’s definitely a must if they want to remain relevant in the market.
2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Performance
On the other hand, we don’t believe that bigger changes in terms of electric motors and overall performance could change. Therefore, base models should be good for 452 horsepower, while the more capable variants will feature a max output of 580 horsepower. Interestingly, both variants feature the same, 775 pound-feet of torque.
With such power figures, it’s no wonder that the all-electric F-150 offers pretty impressive acceleration and overall performance. The more capable version can hit 60mph in just 4 seconds and finish a quarter mile in just 12.7 seconds.
On the other hand, where the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning is going to continue lagging behind the gas-powered F-150 in towing and hauling. The base model can tow just 7.700 pounds, while the most capable variants are good for no more than 10.000 pounds. In terms of payload capacity, it goes between 1.800 and 2.000 pounds, which is also subpar for the segment.
Design
On the other hand, the overall design won’t change, and that refers both to mechanics and aesthetics. The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning will continue with the same chassis and suspension setup, which offers surprisingly goon handling and overall driving manners. The styling is pretty close to the gas-powered version, with key differences in front and rear ends, which clearly accentuate the model’s all-electric nature.
The same thing is with the interior design, which also looks very similar to the gas models. The overall build quality is good, while there is also a good portion of standard and available tech features. The crew cab is the only layout available, with two spacious and comfortable rows of seats. This cabin comes in combination with a 5.5-foot bed and considering that we are talking about an all-electric vehicle, there is also a pretty spacious frunk at the front, which brings an additional level of functionality and practicality.
Features
There’s always a chance to see a couple of updates in this aspect but we are pretty sure that a vast majority of things will remain the same as in the current model. Therefore, base models should come standard with goodies like a 12-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, navigation, a six-speaker stereo, voice recognition and wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
There is also a good number of options available, starting from a 15.5-inch touch screen, an eight- or 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, satellite radio, wireless device charging, HD Radio, a twin-panel moonroof, a locking console safe, proximity keyless entry, ambient interior lighting, a universal garage door opener and Phone As A Key. We presume some of these things might become part of the standard equipment in the next year.
2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Release Date and Price
We expect the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning will hit the market sometime in the last quarter, with a starting price of around 58.000 dollars. As mentioned, models like Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer are some of the key competitors.
