It’s been a couple of years since the German manufacturer came up with an SUV that is designed especially for the North American market. These days, we are getting reports about the update, which will include various kinds of styling novelties. However, that’s not all. We are also about to see a pickup version, the 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck.
At this point, details about the new truck are still unavailable. The company came up with a concept called Tanoak, and that is the direction we should look. However, the production version will probably come with less flashy details and more production-friendly design solutions. we presume that the styling will be pretty much the same as on the updated version of the Atlas SUV, which is also about to hit the market by the end of the year. More details should be known in the near future. For now, we must stick mostly to rumors.
2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck Design
When it comes to base design characteristics, things are pretty clear here. The 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck will ride on the same platform as the SUV sibling. It is the well-known MQB architecture, which is highly modular and underprints pretty much everything in VW’s lineup, from Polo to the mid-size Atlas SUV. The truck version will share a lot of parts with the SUV, but we count on several modifications as well.
At this point, we don’t know the exact numbers but do not doubt that the new model will come with a notably stretched wheelbase and overall length. For comparison, the Tanoak is around 11 inches longer than the Atlas, so we may expect similar numbers from the new production model as well. Also, this model will be designed to provide not just better utility capabilities, but also to act better off the road. Among other modifications, we can also count on notably higher ground clearance.
When it comes to the styling, we expect nothing but a close resemblance to the Atlas SUV. This particularly refers to the front end, which should be pretty much identical. Still, keep in mind that the mid-size SUV is about to receive a facelift, so we expect to see the same novelties on the 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck as well. At this point, we know that the new face will include new headlights and grille, with the design language that closely resembles new passenger car models like Jetta or Arteon.
On the other side, the rest of the body will come in a typical truck manner. We presume that the new 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck will come with typical truck design, and exclusively with a double cab and short bed layout.
Once again, we count on a lot of similarities with the SUV sibling. Moreover, many things should be identical, particularly when it comes to dashboard design. That’s not a bad thing at all, despite the SUV has been criticized for some pretty cheap materials in certain areas. Still, such a cabin would feature much higher quality compared to most trucks, so there is really nothing to worry about. Also, count on a load of tech goodies, including the latest infotainment system, while the famous Digital Cockpit should be available in higher trim levels.
Still, the strongest point of the 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck interior should be the amount of space. The SUV is already one of the biggest models in the class. With additional inches in wheelbase, the new truck should provide plenty of legroom in both rows, as well as a quite decent-sized cargo bed.
2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck Engines
While some aspects of the truck may look intriguing, things are pretty clear with the powertrain lineup. We expect no surprises here, so there should be two familiar engines in the lineup. Base models should come with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which is good for about 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. On the other side, higher trims will be equipped with a familiar 3.6-liter V6, which is good for about 276 horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines will find in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission. Also, both engines are quite typical when it comes to fuel efficiency. In the Atlas SUV, the turbo-four returns around 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The V6 returns around 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway and we may expect similar ratings from the new pickup truck.
2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck Release Date and Price
According to most reports, the 2021 VW Atlas Pickup Truck should hit the market by the end of the year. We presume that base models will go around 30.000 dollars. Honda Ridgeline should be the key competitor, but there are also traditional body-on-frame pickup trucks, such as Tacoma, Colorado, Ranger etc.
