The new generation of the popular full-size truck has been around for about a year. Now, we finally have a chance to test an all-new, diesel version of this pickup. The new model, known as the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has plenty of things to offer. It is an efficient but yet highly capable pickup truck, with an engine that seems like a perfect pick for a vehicle like this one. We have finally got numbers in terms of fuel economy and we can all agree that they look impressive, especially if we consider a large tank capacity and amazing range.

Other than that, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel comes in a typical Ram 1500 manner, well equipped and full of advanced technologies, with a high level of comfort. All in all, a version worth considering.

2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Specs

Let’s start with the most basic information first. The new version comes with significant upgrades compared to the previous generation. Although we are talking about the same 3.0-liter inline-six that comes from the Italian diesel engine manufacturer called VM Motori, there are some nice revisions. The biggest one is definitely a new turbocharger. Thanks to it, the new version features more power and significantly more torque. Instead of 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, the new version of the engine is good for about 260 horsepower and quite impressive 480 pound-feet of max torque. Such numbers ensure amazing performances, but fuel economy is at a high level as well.

Fuel Economy

The new diesel-powered truck brings benefits in many ways and naturally, fuel economy is the first thing that comes to mind. It has been tested and the numbers look pretty impressive. The new version returns around 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Combined, this would go around 26 miles per gallon. Of course, those would be numbers for base RWD models. When it comes to 4×4 versions, numbers are a little bit lower. You may count on about 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

These numbers are pretty much on par with average sedans, while another impressive thing is the range. This truck features a 33-gallon fuel tank. So, you may count on more than 1000 miles on a single tank

How does this compare with gasoline counterparts?

Well, the difference is obvious. For example, the base 3.6-liter V6 returns around 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. 4×4 models drop for 1 mpg. The 5.7-liter V8 is even thirstier. It returns 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

The difference in fuel economy is obvious but another thing we should mention is that the diesel is also more capable. The towing capacity goes all-away up to 12.560 pounds. For comparison, the Hemi V8 can tow up to 11.500 pounds.

Obviously, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is notably slower compared to gasoline models. It needs around 8.1 seconds to get to 60 mph. On the other side, the Ram 1500 needs just 6.4 seconds when equipped with a Hemi engine.

2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel vs Competition

Of course, key competitors are diesel versions of Silverado and F-150 trucks. All three models are very similar, though there are some quite notable differences.

When it comes to Silverado, you may count on a similar 3.0-liter inline-six engine. It features a little bit more power, but less torque. Numbers go around 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. In terms of fuel economy, the Silverado is slightly better, and average ratings go for one mpg higher. On the other side, Ram features better towing capacity, by a pretty large marking, as the Silverado can tow only 9.100 pounds.

The F-150 is the only model that features the company’s own engine. Instead of flat cylinder design, there is a V6 setup, with three liters in displacement. This is the least powerful engine among these three, with a max output of 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, fuel economy pretty much the same in the city, but slightly lower on the highway. Once again, towing ratings are lower, but still much better compared to Silverado. The F-150 can tow up to 11.500 pounds.

2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Release Date and Price

Given the specs, the new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will definitely have a lot of things to offer. With great towing ratings and quite decent fuel economy, it is in a clear advantage compared to both rivals. The new model is expected to hit the market by the end of the year. Also, a good thing to know is that the new engine will be available already in the Tradesman trim level. So, it’s no wonder that the base price will go around 38.500 dollars, which seems quite reasonable.
