2020 GMC Canyon Redesign, Changes, Release Date, and Price

0

GMC Canyon is a twin brother of Chevy Colorado. It is a rebadged version with some unique upgrades. Why does General Motors is doing this? Well, the GMC trucks and SUVs are between Chevrolet vehicles and premium branch Cadillac. So, buyers can buy a similar model with more or less equipment. Also, there are some changes beyond the branding. Whatsoever, the 2020 GMC Canyon is going to share more with Colorado than any other two other mid-size trucks.

The current generation of the pickup dates from 2014. New series of the compact truck will come in 2022. It was officially confirmed by the company. And what about the 2020 GMC Canyon? Facelift and few changes will announce what to expect from the next-gen truck. What’s more, we will see an update on the high-end trim level, Denali. Also, the 2020 Canyon could be more off-road oriented if GM decides to add some features from Chevy Colorado ZR2. All in all, the GMC Canyon 2020 is going to be one of the stars, no matter which shows in 2019 it chooses for a debut.

2020 GMC Canyon Specs

Well, the versatility of the 2020 GMC Canyon will never be in doubt. This pickup truck is going to offer three engine choices. Four-cylinder, V6, or diesel, you will find whatever you like.

The base models are getting power from an inline-four drivetrain. A 2.5-liter unit is pretty capable with outputs of 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. Automatic and manual transmission box is available as power routers. Also, buyers will choose between two- and four-wheel drive. Towing capacity with this engine is 3,500 pounds, while the 2020 GMC Canyon will return 22-23 mpg with 2WD and 21 mpg with 4WD.

More serious towing capacity is coming with a 3.6-liter V6 engine. Although it is larger, this powertrain is also very efficient. Buyers will get 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, extra towing capability, and it will cost them only 1-2 mpg combined. So, specs sheet of this model says the fuel economy is 18/25 mpg with 2WD. Maximum towing capacity is 7,000 pounds, and this is among the best records in the mid-size segment. No manual transmission is available to transfer power from V6 engine.

2020 GMC Canyon Diesel

Last but not the least diesel engine is making both 2020 GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado leaders in the mid-size segment. With this drivetrain, trucks can tow 7,700 pounds. It is a 2.8-liter Duramax unit. Turbodiesel mill bursts out 181 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is very smooth. It also makes this drivetrain more efficient. Owners of the 2020 GMC Canyon Diesel can count on 30 mpg with 2WD. In urban areas, the fuel economy drops to 23 mpg. AWD models will return 20/28 miles per gallon.

Can We See a Hybrid Truck in 2020?

Hybrids and electric vehicles are the future of the automotive world. It is a matter of time when we will see the first units run from the factory lines. Although many fans are more interested in big pickups, mostly because of Tesla’s activity and the legendary F-150, mid-size trucks could be the first to get hybrid drivetrains. Well, some big SUVs are already pairing V6 units with electric batteries. For example, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is using a 3.5-liter engine as the base. So, the similar displacement could be built by General Motors.

2020 GMC Canyon Redesign and Changes

The new 2020 GMC Canyon will be revisited by designers. Changes will include modifications on the front fascia and interior. The new grille, headlights layout, and bumper are noteworthy changes we can expect. Also, the new pickup truck could be lifted. It will boost off-road capabilities and overall performance. Currently, the pickup sits at 8.2 inches from the ground. Canyon will also keep the same dimensions. It is 212 inches long and 74 inches wide. Wheelbase is 128 inches.

Designers will try to decrease the curb weight of the 2020 GMC Canyon. Currently, the truck is between 4,000 and 4,500 pounds, depending on configurations. New materials, such as aluminum and carbon fiber will put it on diet and save some weight. We still don’t know how many pounds the 2020 Canyon is going to lose.

Interior

Inside the 2020 GMC Canyon, we can find more differences between this truck and its twin, Chevrolet Colorado. Accessories and the layout are making this model very modern. It uses slightly more quality materials than its sibling. Also, the Canyon interior is very practical with many storage areas. We will find some space even in the backrests of seats. Standard infotainment screen can be upgraded to an 8-inch display.

2020 GMC Canyon Denali

The high-end version GMC Canyon Denali is the only premium mid-size truck in the market. No other pickup can match its offer and everything it brings. For example, leather seats are luxurious, stylish, and comfortable. The cozy cabin is packed with a lot of hi-tech and safety features. Navigation is standard, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Triple door seals will keep most sounds out of the Canyon’s cabin. The multi-functional steering wheel is wrapped in leather. Control buttons’ layout is simple and easy to use. A V6 and turbodiesel Duramax are engine choices. So, the 2020 GMC Canyon Denali is not going to lack power.

2020 GMC Canyon Release Date, Future, New Generation

The 2020 GMC Canyon will arrive somewhere in 2019. However, its sibling Chevrolet Colorado is coming first for sure. The company is paying more attention to its SUV class. Well, it is the major threat and competition for Canyon. Towing capability and performance of these vehicles are now very similar to trucks. So, with SUVs built on BoF platform, truckmakers have to worry about their products.

Nevertheless, it won’t stop General Motors from building a new generation. It is coming out in 2022. Sales are still making a lot of profit, and new innovations will make a statement. We hope these are not going to affect the price of the upcoming Canyon. With the base four-cylinder engine, the truck will cost around $22,000. Of course, this is far away from serious driver’s demands. But, for V6 buyers must add around $2,000. Diesel increases the price by $5,000. Denali trim can easily jump over $50k with all its equipment.
