The 2020 VW Amarok could finally enter the US market. But, the German truckmaker will do it with a special Atlas Tanoak version. So, Volkswagen is going to the major truck market in the world after it recorded serious sales outside the United States. European and Australian fans are eager to see what changes the new edition is bringing. According to early rumors, the pickup will take a spot in the mid-size segment, although it is larger than competitors in Europe and Australia.

The mid-size truck market is growing. Ford brought back its Ranger to the US soil. It was one of the major rivals for the Amarok. However, we will see the growth of the class with diesel and hybrid models in upcoming seasons. One of the new additions will be the 2020 VW Amarok. We believe the truck is not getting diesel powertrains, thanks to the recent scandal. Instead, the German carmaker will go with four-cylinder and V6 units. The company also develops a hybrid drivetrain, which could draw more attention to 2020 Volkswagen Amarok.

2020 VW Amarok

2020 VW Amarok Specs

Currently, the Amarok truck is using both petrol and diesel drivetrains. The entry-level models will continue to use a 2.0-liter TSI unit. This engine is capable to produce 160 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. It offers better energy output, but less twisting power than a base diesel setup.

A 2.0-l TDI is good for 140 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Bi-Turbo version of the same drivetrain is available with two kinds of tunings and outputs. This configuration can produce 160 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. After the revisit in 2012, engineers increased numbers to 180 horsepower and 310 pound-feet.

The 2020 VW Amarok will be available with either rear-wheel drive or 4Motion AWD system. The first one can return over 31 mpg (7,5 l/100 km). With all wheels in function, the truck will return fewer miles or kilometers. Its gas mileage drops under 30 mpg (8 l/100 km). The maximum towing capacity of the model with the four-cylinder engine is 7,100 pounds (3,200 kg). This is not bad for a four-cylinder truck. Well, the pickup is slightly larger than other mid-size models. But, since there is no class between this and full-size segment, we will place it in the smaller tier.

Bluemotion V6 Engine

The last time we saw engine upgrades on the 2020 VW Amarok, engineers added a V6 drivetrain. A diesel again. Well, this mighty unit raised the game to another level. Volkswagen’s TDI V6 mill is capable to create between 160 and 220 horsepower. Also, this 3.0-l displacement will add 405 pound-feet of torque. At the same time, it is more environmental friendly than its smaller siblings. That makes this engine a favorite to find its place under the hood of the US model. If this happens, it is going to be one of the toughest mid-size trucks in the market. Just, for example, new Ram 1500, Ford F-150, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickups will use diesel engines with 430-450 lb-ft of torque. Another reason to suspect that 2020 Volkswagen Amarok could be among this group of vehicles.

Hybrid

The ID Crozz concept could debut soon. It is an all-electric platform for crossovers and SUVs. But, the 2020 VW Amarok could take advantage of the development and borrow some pieces of evolution in these classes. Well, before we see the EV versions, the new Tiguan will appear as the plug-in hybrid. The launch is planned for 2020 and another vehicle could use the same platform the same season – Volkswagen Atlas.

This is not a surprise knowing the other companies are also developing their hybrids. The first full-size truck is Ram 1500. Well, it is not a classic system, but mild-hybrid version. Ford has a big plan of electrification its entire fleet. An F-150 truck could be the first one to get such powertrain. Chevy and Toyota are not going to be late, not in full-size, nor in the mid-size segment. However, the presence of another rival will make everyone pay attention to 2020 VW Amarok.

2020 VW Amarok vs Ranger

2020 VW Amarok Styling

Volkswagen is well-known for its functional and aesthetic design. Everything on their vehicles seems to be simple. But, that is an art. Designers will have a lot of work before the 2020 VW Amarok becomes ready. Some say the truck will borrow front fascia from its SUV sibling, Atlas. But, we doubt. Some features and exterior details might be similar, but it happens thanks to the same design language the company is using.

Well, the US version of the pickup must meet the requirements of this specific market. On the other hand, the 2020 Volkswagen Amarok will definitely use some of its old solutions, especially bed features. However, buyers outside the US will continue to see the sleek and attractive truck on streets with 7.5 inches of ground clearance. So, it won’t be a problem if you need to go off the road with this pickup. Special version for all terrains might be the star of the lineup.

Interior

The new 2020 VW Amarok will have to show something special to draw the attention of spoiled Americans. Well, with growing competition (return of Ford Ranger, the possible comeback of Dodge Dakota, introduce of Jeep Gladiator), the German company must to breathtaking things inside the cabin. Functional and elegant, that is all we need. Navigation will be optional, that is for sure. We can bet the Apple CarPlay comes as a standard feature. Only Touareg is not offering it. We will see many more options and features, as well as configurations from 2020 VW Amarok.

2020 VW Amarok Release Date

The 2020 VW Amarok is not the only truck the German carmaker is bringing to the USA. It will come together with a premium Audi Pickup Truck. However, the non-luxury version could happen before the high-end models enter the US soil. The show starts late in 2019 when the VW plans the premiere of the Amarok. Hybrid and premium Audi truck will arrive during 2020.
