Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck: Rumors, Release Date and Price

0

Volvo is among the leaders in the automotive world in many segments. One of them is a semi truck class. But, the company is not making a pickup truck. Yet. First of all, there are rumors telling the Swedish company is planning the move. Then, we have more serious info when the spy shots of extended XC90 appeared. Well, it was still in the form of an SUV, but conversion to the truck is much easier when the platform is there. So, the Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck is becoming a reality.

The pickup will take the spot in the mid-size segment. This is one of the best-selling classes in the industry. The return of the Ford Ranger confirms the bright future. Also, the new Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck will be a luxury model. This is a somehow questionable move. Besides GMC Canyon Denali, there won’t be other competition for the Volvo Pickup Truck. With reason. Sales of these vehicles are not making enough profit, so carmakers are not making luxury mid-size trucks. But, if someone can surprise the entire market, that is Volvo.

Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck Concept

The Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck will be based on the popular SUV. Well, it is somehow expected. But, there will be a lot of modifications to the current vehicle before it becomes ready for production. Well, we will see if the truck is going to use a unibody or body-on-frame architecture. That will set the direction of development for this pickup. The advantage of the unibody concept is better handling and cheaper production. On the other hand, BoF boosts towing capacity and safety.

Well, the XC90 SUV is using the Scalable Product Architecture unibody platform. If the pickup truck borrows this concept, it will be the second such model on the US market, after Honda Ridgeline. The Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck is then a unicorn. Ridgeline has no luxury model, and GMC Canyon Denali is using body-on-frame architecture.

Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck Spy Photos

Until 2018 we could only listen to rumors about the Volvo’s pickup truck. Now, this is becoming a reality with spy shots unveiling something that could be it. Well, the XC90 still has a form of an SUV. But, the spied prototype is longer than the base model. With extra 8-10 inches, the total length will be in the range of mid-size pickup trucks. Also, some other details are showing upgrades characteristic for pickups.

Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck Engine, Specs

Under the bonnet of the SUV is a 2.0-liter engine. However, there are three different setups available, and each of them could be the solution for the Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck.

The base setup includes a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque. For example, Chevy Colorado and Nissan Frontier are delivering much less power from XC90. This output is closer to Frontier’s V6 260 hp and 280 lb-ft.
If Volvo decides to go with a T6 engine (a 2.0-liter supercharged V6), then it beats Colorado’s V6. XC90 Volvo Pickup Truck will be able to create 315 hp, compared to its rival’s 308 hp.

Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck Hybrid

This is not all about the Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck and its engines. The SUV also offers a hybrid T8 AWD configuration. Again, a 2.0-liter petrol will serves as the base and it pairs 87 hp electric motor. The total output of the entire system is 400 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. However, this seems to be too powerful for a mid-size pickup. So, engineers in Volvo will probably downtune this hybrid model. Furthermore, the T8 system is using only an all-wheel drive.
Luxury truck, built on a unibody platform, and also a hybrid, make the unique mixture for the Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck. The Swedish company aims big things with such configuration. Well, the concept is interesting, but the price is going to be hefty.

Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck Release Date Rumors

The new Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck is not coming as soon as fans would expect. There are spy photos, but the production is still not close. However, the first prototypes could appear even during 2019. Volvo, if they want the piece of the cake from pickup truck market, needs to speed up the development. The importance of the truck is big, so the Swedish company will launch it at one of the major auto shows in the US. We still don’t know if the pickup is coming to other markets.
Being so unique will make Volvo XC90 Pickup Truck one of the most expensive models in the mid-size segment. Luxury features and hybrid drivetrain will make the price jump pretty high. Experts believe such configuration will make the truck cost at least $40,000. However, the base models will be less expensive, but still luxurious and comfortable. The XC90 Pickup Truck could enter the market with a vehicle that costs around $33,000.
